Dos & Don’ts For All Skin Types

As per request, today’s post is about various skin types and the dos and don’ts for skin care and makeup application. From experience with different skin types, the way one person cleans their skin and applies makeup IS and SHOULD BE drastically different than someone with a different skin type. That being said, no two people have the EXACT same skin, which makes us all beautifully unique. Furthermore, you know your skin better than anyone, so before taking advice from any self proclaimed beauty expert, trust your intuition when caring for your own body. Skin types include normal skin, oily skin, combination skin, sensitive skin, dry skin, ageing skin, irritated dry skin and everything in between. At different points throughout your life your skin will change, and it could go back and forth between seasons and habits throughout the year as well.

Normal Skin

  • Cleanse with a mild cleanser twice a day
  • Exfoliate weekly
  • Moisturize twice a day

  • Use strong and scented cleansers, it will throw off the balance of your skin
  • Exfoliate too little, or too often
  • Use heavy moisturizers
  • Neglect sun protection

Oily Skin

  • Prep your skin with primer before applying makeup
  • Don’t over-powder, it will get cakey
  • Invest in blotting papers
  • Extra mild cleaners or even warm water to remove dirt as harsh products cause over production of oil
  • Exfoliate 2-3 times per week to remove dead skin cells
  • Moisturizing oily skin is just as important as moisturizing dry skin. Moisturizing will actually calm oil secretion, making it less likely to over produce oils.
  • Use detoxing masks or peels that absorb oils deep within pores.

  • Use heavy moisturizer
  • Neglect moisturizing
  • Dry your skin out with alcohol based products

Combination Skin

  • Use strobing creams beneath your foundation for some added sheen to dry areas without irritating oily areas
  • Pick a bronzer with shimmer
  • Use balancing formula cleansers
  • Use mattifying serum in your tzone specifically
  • Moisturize with liquid and gel products
  • Use oil free sunscreen
  • Try a glycolic peel weekly

  • Use full on masks, they are typically geared to dry OR oily skin
  • Use alcohol based or drying products
  • Exfoliate with harsh products, combination skin doesn’t require exfoliating as often (sometimes is okay if you find your skin more dry than normal)

Dry Skin

  • Moisturize with olive oil or coconut oil nightly
  • Try a honey and milk mask
  • Use dewy foundations
  • Use setting sprays and liquid based makeup
  • Always use sunscreen
  • Make sure to hydrate with water (yes it has an effect on your skin and make up application!)

  • Use matte makeup
  • Avoid powders
  • Avoid alcohol or citrus based products

Ageing Skin

  • Treat similar to dry skin
  • Moisturize twice daily
  • Apply sunscreen religiously
  • Try to incorporate rosehip seed oil into your skin care regimen

  • Use  powder based makeup, it will crease much easier
  • Over expose your skin to the sun
  • Exfoliate too often

Sensitive/Irritated Skin

  • Try hempseed oil to remove redness and calm itchy skin
  • Try peppermint oil to soothe rashes with its cooling effect
  • Pay attention to the detergents you use on your laundry, opt for lower concentration if necessary

  • Use scented or strong products
  • Prolonged exposure to water. This can cause flare ups
  • Avoid stress at all costs
